• Durable goods orders fell short of expectations.
• Goldman Sachs predicts bigger write-downs at financial situations.
• The number of mortgage applications fell by 7.6%

In spite of this consumer confidence rose, the first increase in five months. Who would have guessed?

The truth is that Americans have a way of rising above the negative news and all of the adversity. In a time when energy costs are increasing, insurance costs are almost unbearable, and health care costs have gone through the roof, people find a way to work through the issues. Many have begun looking for creative ways to cut expenses or bring in some extra income. That can mean getting a second part-time job, stay-at-home moms looking for ways to make money at home, and couples starting a home based business.
